Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, this temple is situated at an elevation of 1325 meters above sea level and at a distance of 31 kms outside Rishikesh. Neelkant Mahadev Temple is devoted to the Lord Shiva who is situated in this temple in the form of a Shivlinga. This temple is supposed to be one of the most important and popular temples of the Rishikesh. Hindu mythology is associated to the history of this temple in many ways. According to legends Lord Shiva came here for meditation when he consumed poison during the sea churning by Gods and Demons to obtain Amrita.
But poison came out from the sea instead of Amrita. Therefore, Lord Shiva's consumed that poison to save the mankind from the poison and his throat became blue colored due to the poison, so he is known as a NeelKanth (Blue throated) here. Thousands of tourists visit this temple during Shivratri and Kanwar Mela. Temple is also accessible by trekking route and by road from Swarg Ashram. Temple Timings: 05 AM to 01 PM and 04 PM to 09 PM.
